Tips to Get Your Car Winter Ready

Prepare your car for winter!

Winter is coming and the holiday season is here again! Along with all of the hustle and bustle that go with this time of year, you need to remember to get your car winterized, too. By preparing your car for winter at Mastermind Enterprises, you can take on all of your challenges just a little easier. The severe weather conditions during winter can cause serious damage to your car just by the temperature being too cold.

Make sure your car has the proper level of all its fluids, including antifreeze, power steering, radiator, transmission, and windshield washer fluid. It’s important to be up to date with your regular car maintenance and consider winter's special challenges on your vehicle. At Mastermind Enterprises, your safety is one of our top concerns. Here is a winter weather auto maintenance checklist for your car to keep it in the best shape for the cold weather to come. The items on this checklist should keep your car working properly in even the most severe winter weather.

Winter Weather Auto Checklist

Check Your Tires
One of the first things to do is check your tires, tire pressure and the tread depth. Always make sure you have enough pressure in your tires. For every drop in temperature of 10 degrees Fahrenheit, tires lose a pound of pressure. An underinflated tire is as hazardous as hydroplaning on water and won’t “bite” through snow down to the hard pavement when you need it to.

Tires should have good tread (1/16" deep) to handle the snow and to be safe. Experts agree that it’s best to go 1/8" deep on your tire tread. You need the deepest grooves possible in your tires for maximum safety.

Check Your Fluids
Check all of your car’s fluids including oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid, power steering, radiator, transmission, and windshield washer fluid. Make sure you use a washer fluid with antifreeze properties for winter weather use.

Keep Your Gas Tank Full
It’s better for your car, your gas mileage, and your peace of mind.

Get New Windshield Winter Wipers Blades
Your windshield wiper blades normally last about a year. Wiper blades should clear your windows completely with each swipe. Replace blades if there is any streaking. Limited visibility will prove especially hazardous during storms with rain, snow and fog. You need your wipers for extra help during these times.

Check Your Battery, Belts & Hoses
Your battery has a normal lifespan of approximately 5 years. Ask your mechanic when you get your oil  changed (every 3,000 miles) to do a battery check before it's too late. Cold weather drains the life out of your car's battery quickly – especially if you park your car outdoors. Broken or cracked belts and hoses can you leave you stranded and stuck in the cold.

Check Your Brakes
Have your brake system thoroughly inspected by an ASE certified technician to confirm all of your brake components are ready for the slippery roads of winter. Brake lines, rotors, pads, drums, and brake fluid are all vital components to keeping you safe on snowy and icy roads.

Check Your Lights
Check all of your lights and replace burnt out bulbs (if needed).

Expensive Car Repair Mistake #3 - Ignoring Vehicle Symptoms

We pay attention to symptoms that our bodies give us when something is wrong. If we ignore these
symptoms, we can end up paying thousands in medical bills. Your vehicle works the same way. Your vehicle has many different ways to tell you if something is not operating as it should in one of its many systems.

When something doesn't sound, smell, or look right, check under your hood first. Your mechanic will thank you for knowing more about your vehicle and you can potentially save a lot of money, too.

Never ignore a constant symptom with your vehicle!

The most important things your vehicle needs are regular oil changes, automatic transmission flushes and brakes. By having these services performed at regular intervals by a qualified technician, your vehicle can also be checked for any symptoms you may have missed or other services needed before they turn into large repairs needed.

In between these services, it is important to listen to what your vehicle is telling you, so you can identify a simple problem before it turns into a major problem! For example, if your is pulling to the left while you are driving, you could have low tire pressure in one of your tires. An easy fix of removing a nail in your tire and having it patched could prevent a flat tire and even an accident.

Is your check engine light on? It could be a simple problem such as a bad oxygen sensor or just a loose gas cap.

You should be checking the following regularly without any abnormal symptoms from your vehicle:

• air filter
• wiper blades
• fluid levels (brake, power steering, coolant, oil, transmission)
• Battery terminals (Are they corroded?)   
• Belts (Are there any visible cracks?)

If one of the above items are mentioned when you bring your vehicle in for service, ask the mechanic to show it to you or to keep the old parts if you approve the repairs when given an estimate. If you want to wait to have the repairs or service completed, ask the shop these questions: 

• What are the downsides of waiting for the repairs? 
• Does it need to be completed right away? 
• Is it a safety issue? 
• Will the part fail and leave me stranded if I wait?

Ignoring your check engine light or service engine soon light can mean major repairs for your vehicle, possibly even an engine replacement. 

One of the most critical warnings that your vehicle can give you when it is not functioning properly is to illuminate your check engine light or service engine soon light. The main function of a check engine light is to alert the driver to a variety of existing potential problems, even if the vehicle appears to be running normally. At Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop in Denver, we offer you a FREE computer scan and diagnosis* in our shop.

If your check engine light or service engine soon light is flashing, it is telling you there is a more serious problem like a misfire. A misfire can overheat the catalytic converter that could create a fire hazard if it is malfunctioning.

Common malfunctions that illuminate the Check Engine Light are:

• a loose gas cap
• faulty oxygen sensors
• faulty mass air sensor
• faulty spark plugs or wires
• faulty catalytic converter(s)
• poor gas mileage

When you take your vehicle to a shop for a check engine light diagnosis, make sure they have professional ASE Certified technicians who are trained in OBDII diagnosis and repair. The technician needs to understand and examine the data streams including the idle speed, throttle response, engine temperature, fuel system pressure, manifold vacuum, exhaust emission levels and many other symptoms that point to what is causing the problem when plugging in a diagnostic tool to your vehicle's computer.

Your vehicle's computer can also be scanned by an inexpensive code reader or at a local auto parts store for free, but this will not necessarily tell you the problem your vehicle is having. It is a common misconception that the code given by the vehicle's computer instantly "diagnoses" the vehicle. The code simply gives the technician looking at your vehicle a starting point of where to start looking for problems. If you know the codes your vehicle's computer is producing, it is always helpful to the technician servicing your vehicle.

Turning off your Check Engine Light does not repair the underlying problem and the light will come back on later, possibly leading to larger, more costly repairs later. 

If your "Service Required" light comes on, this is different then the Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon Light. This simply means your vehicle is due for an oil change or other scheduled maintenance. This light is a friendly reminder that it is time bring your vehicle in before you have bigger problems to worry about. It does not tell you that there is a problem with your vehicle.

"I have never written a review for Yelp before, but my experience at Mastermind Enterprises was just to great not to give them a thumbs up.

I took my Kia in to mastermind as I was told by another mechanic that I had a short between the blower motor and the relay. I was expecting to pay $300-$500 to get it fixed. When I was driving over to drop the car off, I hit a bump and the blower came on. When the mechanic called I was told that he weren't sure what the problem was as the problem was hard to diagnosis due to the fact that the blower was working at the moment. He said that he had replaced a connector; he thought that was the problem, but couldn't guarantee it. When I asked about the charge, I was told there would be no charge as he thought he had fixed the problem, but wasn't positive. Wow that really surprised me. An honest mechanic? I would have to say yes. It has now been 4 days and the blower is still working consistently, instead of working sometimes and not others. Although the shop is many miles from my house, I will be taking it to MasterMind from now on. Making Progress on Our '71 El Camino

Full Roller Small Block Chevy Engine

We've been making progress on one of our project vehicles, a 1971 Chevrolet El Camino SS. The new engine and new transmission were installed this week. Mastermind Enterprises, your family owned auto repair shop in Denver, built a new high performance 700R4 transmission with a high stall converter and a full roller small block Chevy engine with lots of goodies.

Good Service & Good Fuel Economy

Most Denver motorists want to save on gas and seek our advice on improving fuel economy. Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop in Denver is frequently asked, "Is really worth the extra effort? Just how much money can I actually save as a motorist in Denver?

At Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop, we’re focusing on the things you can do to improve your truck fuel economy driving around Colorado. We’ll tell you the potential savings per gallon of gas for different maintenance and service for your vehicle.

Replacing a clogged engine air filter. Your engine needs enough air to burn fuel efficiently for the best fuel economy. A clean air filter means you get plenty of air. The fact that the air is clean protects your engine. That can save you up to 10% or 35 cents a gallon.

Fixing a faulty oxygen sensor can improve economy by up to 40%. That’s a whopping $1.40 in savings per gallon! Bring your car to Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop and we'll check your oxygen sensors. Chances are that if an oxygen sensor is kaput your check engine light will come on.

Now, there’s any number of things that could cause your check engine light to come on besides oxygen sensor problems. But if it’s on, get it checked out as soon as you can at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop.

Here’s an easy one. Inflate your tires to the recommended pressure. That could save you 3% or 11 cents a gallon. Even a little drop in tire pressure will bring down your fuel economy, so check your tires every week.

Your vehicle manufacturer has recommended a specific weight of motor oil. The recommendation is based on engine design and will give you the best protection. Using a heavier weight could cost 1-2% in reduced fuel economy, or up to 7 cents a gallon.

Here’s one that’s free: Take it easy when you drive. Aggressive driving (we've all seen this on Denver roads and highways), rocketing away from stop lights, standing on the brakes, punching it for lane changes - really takes a toll on your fuel economy. Cutting out aggressive driving around Denver can save 5% or 18 cents a gallon. The last thing we’ll talk about is excess weight. Our trucks tend to accumulate a lot of things and the weight adds up. Clear out the trunk and only haul stuff when you really need it. For every 100 pounds you can save 2% or 7 cents a gallon.
