The One Who Shut Us Down

Our repair shop in Denver has been closed for different things over the years - being sick, adding babies to the family, but not ever from a blizzard. Blizzard Selene shut us down, not only during the blizzard, but today, too! Usually, we dig out of snowstorms with the rest of the city and we are back at it the next day.

Today, we went to the shop and the roads were pretty clear considering how much we got dumped on!

When we got to the shop, the parking lot was cleared out and we were ready to get to work after resting with our family yesterday. We disarmed the alarm and noticed it wasn't connected to power. We checked the connection and everything was ok.

The fish tank lights turned on, but we didn't have any office lights. The shop lights turned on, but flickered and were dim. The lift didn't have any power and the air compressor wouldn't even turn on! We had phone service, but the modem showed no internet service.

We decided to call Xcel Energy to see how quickly we would have power back up and running. The customer service rep said she didn't know, but they had 800 people working on it. We decided to close the shop for the day, since we wouldn't be able to get any work completed. We put a note on the door and forwarded the phone.

We got a text message from Xcel in the afternoon and contacted our neighbors to see if power was indeed completely back up. Good news! We just heard that power is back - yay! We will be back in the shop tomorrow! Thank you, Xcel Energy, and all the crews working through the storm! We appreciate it!

Ford Truck Repair in Denver

Today we're working on a 2005 Ford F250 with the 5.4 engine. We're replacing the cam sensors and the famous spark plugs. This truck has 166K on it with the original spark plugs! Here is one of the broken spark plugs and the tip of the spark plug that stayed in the engine still on the extraction tool. When removing these plugs, they often break leaving part of the plug inside the cylinder head. Then, a special extraction tool is needed to remove the broken off piece. Our 2005 Expedition is up and running dependably again - FINALLY!!!

Have you ever heard from a mechanic that your car’s problem will have to get worse to be diagnosed? You may have thought that the mechanic was lying to you. You may have even thought that the mechanic was just not very good. We tell people this all the time and often they get mad at us or even doubt our skills.

The truth of the matter is that cars with intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose - period. Recently, we encountered a car with an extremely intermittent problem that was very hard to diagnose. That car just happens to be our own 2005 Ford Expedition with the 5.4L V8 engine.

At first, our Expedition would randomly not start on the first try, but only on cold mornings. It would always start on the second or third try, but we never knew when it would act up. Any day the temperature was over 35˚ the car would start dependably! Every time we were able to get it to act up, it would run perfect as soon as we hooked it up to test equipment. The Expedition would start and run perfect for up to a week, then just not start on the first try when you least expect it to.

Every time we tested the car’s computer system it passed with flying colors! There were no diagnostic codes to work with. We basically had no idea where to start looking for a problem that only happened once in a while. This is when we knew we would have to drive the car until one day it just wouldn’t start at all or the malfunction was at least reproducible.

After about 3 weeks of driving the car and never knowing when it would leave us stranded, it finally totally quit running! Luckily, it decided to no longer run in our driveway, so we had it towed to our shop. With the Expedition no longer running at all, it only took about 30 minutes to determine the cause.

A Simple Fix

This entire nerve racking time of never knowing if it would just die out any second was caused by a simple little relay. Sometimes the relay worked and sometimes it would not. Unfortunately, this one little relay is built into an expensive central junction box. The central junction box is basically the fuse box for the entire car! In the central junction box there are a multitude of relays and fuses, most relays are replaceable, the fuel pump relay is not. The fuel pump relay that was causing our problem had no visual signs of failure, and tested good every single time we checked it! Now after many weeks of frustration, a $400 fuse box fixed the problem and we have our beloved Expedition back on the road again! Most importantly, I have a happy wife again!

Jeep Auto Repair in Denver

The job of the day at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Care in Denver is a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a water pump failure at only 39,309 miles!

We have never seen a vehicle's water pump fail at such a low mileage! This vehicle went into limp in mode with multiple warning lights going off and engine noise. Luckily for our customer, the water pump is covered under Jeep's Powertrain Warranty. So, this Jeep is headed to the dealer for this repair at no cost to our customer. We also helped our customer get a rental car, set up a tow, and set up her repair appointment.

Nissan Xterra Repair in Denver

We're always finding interesting things in our customers cars at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Care in Denver. Today, we found a rodent's nest in a 2007 Nissan Xterra air conditioning unit. The nest had been built on top of the cabin air filter. Imagine all the lovely little bugs and germs that were getting pumped into the car's cabin. Not anymore! Good thing our customer had to come in for an oil change!

When a simple brake job on a Nissan turns into a nightmare at Mastermind Enterprises!

This 2004 Nissan Titan should have been a simple job, until the front caliper bracket bolts broke off ON BOTH SIDES during the front brake job!!! Then, one wheel stud broke on EACH REAR WHEEL during the rear brake job!! The most symmetrical problems we've ever had on one vehicle! Crazy! Happy Wednesday!

The Big Job of the Day at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Care in Denver is a 2001 Jeep Cherokee.

By "saving" $200, we cost ourselves $800 and a lot more work to install the new camera system when we had to replace it!! That's 4 times what we thought we had saved and more time to install another system. We would have been much better off if we just purchased the quality camera system because we really would have saved $800 and time, too.

In Everything, Give Thanks

We have decided to make Mondays even better by making them "Mastermind Mondays" at our family auto repair shop in Denver. What does that mean? Well, let us start from the very beginning.

We changed our business name in 2008 because we changed from a mobile auto repair service to a full service auto repair shop in Denver. We chose Mastermind Enterprises for our business name for many different, amazing reasons. The most important of these reasons being that God is the Mastermind of our universe and Norm has been given a remarkable gift from God - he is a mastermind with cars. Enterprises simply means company. Essentially, we are God's company blessed with talent for serving others by taking care of their auto repair service needs in Denver.

We have heard amazing compliments from, "You made me so happy that I cried." to "You are the best mechanic I ever had” to “it's like driving a new car." It's a blessing to use our talents to honor God. We realize that we have more to share with others than just an auto repair service. We have the love of God to share with everyone who comes to our family business.

Recently, we put up something new on the walls in our office. It says, "In everything, give thanks. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18" It is a great reminder to us at our shop everyday - for the difficult days and for the easy days.
God is ALWAYS with us. 

It's easy for us to give thanks when everything is going our way, our family is healthy and happy, our car is running smoothly, we have a job, and life is going according to plan. We can give thanks for good things like these most days. But giving thanks for things when life gets rough? This doesn't always come so easy. We get so distracted by trying to figure out the problems ourselves that we forget to turn to the one who can help us figure it out the best way.

Do you give thanks for pain, disappointments, losing a loved one unexpectedly, a check engine light coming on, the car not shifting smoothly, worrying about enough money to make ends meet? In moments like these, we can be thankful we are still alive to feel the pain and disappointments, that we have a car to have problems with, and a great mechanic to help us take care of those pesky car problems! We may not always get the answers we want to hear, but God knows. He knows everything and will work all things for good when we trust in Him and give Him thanks.

Be joyful always; pray continually;

give thanks in all circumstances, 

for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 

~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

It may even feel at times that you have nothing to feel thankful for. How do you give thanks in everything? For everything? Give yourself time to feel thankful. A great healer of all wounds is time. It may be painful now, but joy will come again. You may not be able to even think about it now, but if you experience your feelings today, not judging yourself for being less thankful than you should be, then you will be able to see God's Hand in everything in your life. This will start to change how you feel. We've been there, too. One day you will discover yourself giving thanks for the same things that were the most difficult experiences of your life. This is a mystery that only God can speak to you directly about in your heart. What you resist today, you welcome back to you tomorrow.

With Thanksgiving upon us, we instinctively give thanks for everything out of habit. But we don't have to. We can give thanks because we WANT to or not give thanks because we don't want to. God knows our hearts. He knows where we are at with the mountains and valleys we are experiencing in our lives. Knowing God loves us through it all is enough to make you feel just a little more thankful. Isn't it? Think of it as the first step to feeling thankful for everything.

We can do this by praying continually and being joyful always. We can always rejoice because we know what is true about God and His plan for our lives, so we can be thankful in all circumstances. When we know God is working all things for good, we can be joyful, no matter what our situation is. We can pray about His merciful and gracious plans in our daily lives for our spiritual and physical needs. We can give thanks in everything that comes along in our life, even if it's something that we aren't happy about or is unpleasant.

It's not always easy for us to be thankful when running our auto repair shop. Some days it seems like everything is going "wrong" - we get the wrong parts and have to re-order them over AND over again, we have a misunderstanding with a customer or we can't help someone because the part is unavailable. Everything that happens in our life happens for a reason and helps us to spread God's grace in a generous way. We have gotten wrong parts because we were able to find a better option for our customer with just one more phone call to the last possible vendor that could possibly carry the specific part that we need. Our customer gets to know their car better because we have to take a little more time to explain things to help them understand what is going on with their car and what needs to be fixed and why. When you have problems that cause you worry, like that pesky check engine light that you don't have time to take care of until next week, just start praying about it, and be thankful. God will work it all out.

We operate our family auto repair shop with thankfulness for our customers. One of the ways we do this is by giving 1 hour of free diagnosis to our customers when they fix their car at our auto repair shop. This is our way of saying "Thank you for doing business with us!" We are thankful for each of customers because without them, we wouldn't be here.

We are blessed to serve others and help you be safe on the road. We are thankful for our vendors who serve us by bringing us the parts we need to take care of our customers. When it's a family company! 

Auto repair and service can be a very difficult and stressful time. That's why our family works hard at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Care in Denver to make it an easy and happy experience. We started our family business from humble beginnings with our 1984 Ford E350 Cargo Van to the current auto repair shop we are now operating from in Denver.

We built our family auto repair business in Denver over the years with great customers who have supported us along the way. Many of our customers have been with us from the very beginning! We have watched our customers' families grow right alongside ours. We service and repair cars that are passed down through the generations, like this beautiful 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air.

We opened our first auto repair company, a mobile auto repair service, on September 20th, 2002 when we had a 20 month old daughter and were expecting our second daughter. We saved our money from that business to open our first auto repair shop in Denver in 2004.

We found the second location for our company on Clarkson St in 2008 and changed our company name because we no longer offered a mobile repair service. We added many new customers and welcomed our first son here. Mastermind Enterprises Auto Care stayed in that shop for almost 5 years when we needed more space because our auto repair business and family were bursting at the seams!

In 2012, we moved into our current Denver auto repair shop location on 74th Ave. We are blessed to watch our auto repair business and family continue to grow. In 2014, we welcomed our second son to our family. We are still looking to purchase the best permanent location to serve our customers. Mastermind Enterprises Auto Care is committed to keeping good prices for our customers, so we will not settle on that permanent location until we find a perfect fit.
